I was supposed to be going out for a drink on Monday with a friend. I've known him for ages, though it's been an electronic friendship till now, but he said he'd like to meet up, so we arranged a time and a place and lo and behold, he didn't turn up. He emailed me to explain; he said that if anyone saw us who knew him, he'd freak out. I was a bit miffed at this, to put it mildly, but he went on to say it wasn't because of my trans-ness, but because I'm a woman, and he's married.
In a way it's oddly comforting to be rejected for being a woman rather than being a trans-woman, but I feel a weird mixture of emotions - the comforted thing, a little upset at the rejection, guilt at the negative feelings towards myself which come from not feeling more upset.

I've just started this electrolysis malarkey (I had my 3rd session for just under an hour today) and I don't know if it's early days or I have a particularly high pain threshold or my electrologist is very good or what, but I don't really find it all that painful. I haven't even bothered with the EMLA cream I got.

I had a response from the deputy editor of 'The Star' on Thursday. He said that they'd taken note of the contents of my letter and had instructed their staff accordingly. Is this a result? Hopefully, but watch this space!

Fear and Empowerment

On Tuesday while I was sat at my desk in work, one of the things I dreaded but never really expected happened;

I received a phone call from a woman who asked to speak to my previous, male name. I was rather hesitant, but I admitted, perhaps foolishly, that I could be the person she was asking for. She went on to tell me she was Jo Davison, a feature writer for the local newspaper, the Sheffield Star, and wanted to do an article on me. She added that she'd previously written something similar when she worked in Hull, saying she had interviewed a trans woman lorry driver, but this rang alarm bells with me as she kept referring to this person as 'he' and 'him'.

I was somewhat taken aback by all of this (duh!), so said I would think about it and call her back. I phoned her the day after and politely refused, saying that I didn't wish to participate. (I also asked how she'd found out where I work, which she said was via a contact she had within my industry who suggested where to try)

I am quite a private person and not in the public eye, so I'm inclined to believe (naively?) that there isn't much of a story to be written since I won't provide an interview (and I'm very uninteresting, so can't imagine there'd be much more, even if I did!)

So, after I'd phoned her back to refuse, I emailed Christine Burns of Press For Change at the suggestion of another local trans woman who I've just met (which is a whole 'nother story full of spooky coincidences) to see if she had any more advice, since she has a lot of experience with the press as they relate to trans people. She came straight back to me with a load of really useful stuff and people to contact if any further action becomes necessary. One of the things she suggested was to contact the editor of the paper to report the incident. After failing to catch him in his office, by phone, I sent him a letter....

After all this, I felt really feisty and assertive, so did something which in itself is only small but I've never done before - when I wanted to read the Editors Code of the PCC, our web filter in work blocked access (based on the 'Society and Lifestyles' category?!) so I made a request that this was unblocked. This has to go via a local HR director all the way to the group head of HR (haven't they got anything better to do?) So I went through all this rigmarole, still driven by feist!
It carried on while I was going home, so much so that I'm afraid I was driving as aggressively as I used to pre-hormones, and wondered if I'd missed a pill!

So, now having had this happen, and survived, I really think I've found inner strengths I didn't realise I had.

Monday was the first anniversary of my decision to transition, or more correctly, my decision to stop putting things off and get on with my life. I didn't actually remember at the time; it took a reminder from my therapist this evening! However, by coincidence, Monday was a little bit special, as I spent the evening with stacis_leak and friends. (ok, half the evening, since we lost each other by the end!)
I didn't really know where I'd be in a year's time, but I don't think I quite expected I'd be here with my name changed and living full time as myself :-)

*Metric doesn't really work for things like this, does it? I think I'll stick to imperial measurements

It's Good to Talk

I think I might have actually started talking to my dad about stuff that matters (i.e. me!) At sunday lunch today (turkey breast fillets alla pizzaiola), he suggested opening a bottle of sparkling rose wine that's been in the fridge for ages, so we did, and I said it's kind of a celebration, of my first week of going to work as myself, and he actually asked how it had gone :-) It didn't last for very long though, as he changed the subject pretty soon!

I've just finished my first week at work as me and it's been incredibly un-eventful. Perversely though, I've felt a little bit of a let down that there's not been more reaction, either good or bad. I mean what does it take to get a reaction, for goodness' sake? For me to run naked through the office?!
